Russian Telegram channel Agenstvo.News stated that the ruling would allow the imprisonment of LGBT activists for up to 10 years.
Russian authorities will also have the power to imprison individuals who work for and finance LGBT organizations, provide services for them, and even spread information about the LGBT movement.
The court meeting was held behind closed doors, with reporters being allowed in only to hear the verdict. In this case, only representatives of the Justice Ministry participated, and the defendant was absent. The deliberation reportedly lasted four hours.
The motivation behind the decision will not be published since the case is classified as "confidential." The ruling takes effect immediately.
The specifics of what the Justice Ministry means by the "movement" are not immediately clear from the case. The LGBT community in Russia already operates virtually outside the legal framework, and its members face regular persecution and harassment.
Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor established criteria for evaluating information about LGBT propaganda. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a law on Dec. 5, 2022, that completely prohibits "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" among people of all ages.
