Russia kills five in Iskander strike on Merefa, injuring 19 others

Russian forces struck the city of Merefa in Kharkiv Oblast with an Iskander-type ballistic missile on the morning of May 4, killing five people and injuring 19 others, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Russia hit Merefa at about 9:35 a.m., according to investigators. The missile struck a roadway.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said rescuers quickly extinguished two fires after the attack. Sappers from the service and local community officers were also working at the strike sites.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synehubov said the dead were two men, ages 50 and 63, and two women, ages 41 and 52. All those injured are receiving the necessary medical assistance.

The Russian strike set a private house and a car on fire. The fire has since been extinguished.

Other private homes, apartment buildings, four stores and an auto repair shop were damaged.

Emergency medical teams and all relevant services are working at the scene, the regional administration said.
