Russian forces struck railway and energy infrastructure in Zhytomyr Oblast's Korosten district despite a U.S.-announced "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia, regional governor Vitaliy Bunechko said on Oct. 12.

The attacks sparked fires that have since been extinguished. No casualties or injuries have been reported, the regional military administration said.

Korosten Mayor Volodymyr Moskalenko said a Russian drone strike ignited residual fuel at a railway infrastructure facility.

The Ovruch City Council also reported Russian strikes. School administrators were advised to cancel classes on Oct. 12.

“For two consecutive days, the enemy has carried out numerous drone strikes on our community. Both private properties and critical infrastructure facilities have sustained significant damage,” the council said.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service added that Russian forces had repeatedly attacked northern Zhytomyr Oblast since the evening of Oct. 11. Firefighters were forced to retreat to safer locations while extinguishing fires because of the threat of repeated strikes.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces had attacked Ukraine with a Kh-59 guided air-launched missile and 121 attack drones since 6 p.m. on Oct. 11. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted or neutralized 89 drones.

On Oct. 11, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia would begin “from this moment,” saying both sides had agreed to it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later called the announcement “good news” and said it was important for the agreement to “become a reality.” He added that Ukraine supported all forms of ceasefire and efforts to end the war.

According to Axios, the ceasefire applies only to strikes on oil refineries. Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Russian forces struck a thermal power plant in Kharkiv.
