Russian forces attacked Ukraine overnight and into morning with 211 strike drones, including Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas types, Ukraine’s Air Force said on March 16.

“The distinctive feature was an unusual morning attack by the enemy using strike drones of various types toward Kyiv Oblast. The main directions of the attack were Odesa, Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv oblasts,” the military said.

As of 11:00 a.m., air defenses had shot down or suppressed 194 enemy drones. Hits by 16 strike drones were recorded at 10 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at 11 locations.

The Air Force warned that the attack was ongoing, with several enemy drones still in the air.

Multiple explosions were heard in Kyiv on the morning of March 16. Ukraine’s Air Force warned of groups of strike drones and a missile threat to Kyiv and surrounding Oblast.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, Russian forces attempted to strike critical infrastructure in the capital and Oblast.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that drone debris fell in “the very center of the capital,” while the Kyiv City Military Administration reported consequences in the Shevchenkivskyi, Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

An NV correspondent reported that drone debris fell about five meters from the Independence Stele. No damage was reported. A small fire broke out in the first minutes after the fall but was quickly extinguished.
