A drone attack in the Russian city of Kaluga damaged part of the infrastructure of a Yandex data center, knocking out several modules completely, the company's press service said on Oct. 9, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

The company said "some services may operate with interruptions" and that the scale of the damage is being assessed.

Yandex's data center in Kaluga, located in the Grabtsevo industrial park, is the company's most powerful facility. It covers 130,000 square meters (about 1.4 million square feet) and serves internal services.

According to Yandex's original design, the data center is built to hold more than 3,800 server racks, with a total design capacity of 63 megawatts. The site is intended for Yandex's own services and for clients of the Yandex Cloud platform, Russian outlet The Insider reported.

The facility's first phase was commissioned in December 2023. In October 2024, the System Operator of the Unified Energy System said Yandex's largest data center had been connected to the power grid with a maximum power consumption of 49 megawatts.

How much server equipment was actually at the site at the time of the attack has not been disclosed.

Kaluga Oblast Gov. Vladislav Shapsha said 26 drones were shot down over the region overnight.

Ukrainian military officials have not yet commented on the attack.

On Oct. 8, Yandex's data center in the town of Sasovo in Ryazan Oblast was attacked by Ukrainian drones. The strike started a fire at the facility, its operations were suspended, and numerous failures were recorded in the work of Russian services.
