BRICS summit rejects Russia’s push for anti-West coalition, backs UN Charter principles

It mentions Russia's war against Ukraine only once. The declaration stresses the need to act in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for territorial integrity, and supports mediation aimed at a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.

Kyiv views the UN Charter as the main way to achieve peace and condemns Russian aggression as illegal under international law. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that the BRICS countries are not united in support of Russia's war, probably because of their adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. 

The summit did not result in the endorsement of an alternative international settlement system that Russia wanted, with most countries opposing the transformation of BRICS into an anti-American coalition. 

The summit, attended by various world leaders, including Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is being held in Kazan to demonstrate that Russia is not isolated. 

The BRICS group consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and has recently expanded to include members such as Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt. Saudi Arabia has been invited but has not yet joined.
