The Russian government has entrusted this task to the Zelenohrad-based Micron enterprise, which is part of the Element group of companies.
The project involves using the 65-nanometer process that Intel used to produce its Pentium 4 in 2006. Meanwhile, the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers have already mastered the 2-nanometer topology.
"Back in 2011, Micron agreed with the Franco-Italian component manufacturer STMicroelectronics to start producing such chips, but in 2014, due to sanctions over Crimea, cooperation stopped," the statement reads.
"Currently, Micron produces semiconductors based on 180-90 nm topologies. This technology allows for the production of chips for transport cards, equipment for internet providers, and a narrow range of outdated general-purpose processors."
