The container ship Russia damaged with a ballistic missile in Odesa overnight on Oct. 10 was carrying a UN humanitarian consignment bound for Palestine, Ukraine’s Agrarian Policy Minister Vitalii Koval said in a Telegram post.

The missile strike killed eight port workers and injured 11 others. The Panama-flagged ship was loaded with 45 containers full of bottled sunflower seed oil.

“Despite the war, Ukraine supplies produce to 400 million people worldwide,” said Koval.

“We need enhanced air defense over our country and further support from the international community. Ukraine’s food security is also global food security.”

On Oct. 7, a Russian ballistic missile on Odesa port struck a civilian vessel under the flag of Palau, killing a 60-year-old Ukrainian. Five foreign nationals were injured in the attack.

On Oct. 6, Russian forces attacked Odesa with drones and ballistic missiles, damaging a civilian ship. The vessel, under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, was loaded with corn intended for export.
