Russia hits central Sumy with four guided bombs, striking school and homes, killing and injuring people

Updated at 5:25 p.m. Sumy Oblast Governor Oleh Hryhorov said two people were killed in a residential area after four guided aerial bombs struck civilian infrastructure in the city. Six people, including three children, sought medical attention.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on the attack. He said children and teachers at a school where classes were underway at the time of the strike had managed to reach a shelter. A total of 100 people were evacuated. Zelenskyy said Ukraine expects its partners to respond effectively and increase pressure on Russia because “Russia will not stop this madness without real pressure.”

About 40 students were in the school’s shelter at the time of the strike, a school employee told Suspilne reporters. Preliminary reports indicated that none of the children were injured.

On Sept. 27, three guided aerial bombs struck the city, killing an elderly woman and a 16-year-old girl and injuring five people, including one child.

A day earlier, on Sept. 26, Russia struck central Sumy with three guided aerial bombs, killing two people and injuring 23 others, including four children.
