Russia ramps up use of jet-powered drones in strikes against Chernihiv Oblast

He added that Chernihiv Oblast was struck with Banderol loitering munitions on August 3.

“Yesterday we saw a large number of Banderols, which are a hybrid between a cruise missile and a drone,” Chaus noted. “They fly at speeds up to 650 kilometers per hour, making them highly difficult to shoot down.” 

Chaus pointed out that the interception rate of air defense forces in Chernihiv Oblast stood at roughly 70%.

“Our forces shot down 865 UAVs,” he clarified. “An additional 200 were lost from radar or neutralized by electronic warfare systems.”

Chaus previously reported that Russian forces launched a large-scale airstrike on Chernihiv Oblast on August 4.

“Jet drones and Banderol munitions were used,” he stated. “The airstrikes primarily targeted Chernihiv, Pryluky, and Novhorod-Siverskyi – specifically businesses, logistics companies, and critical infrastructure.”

Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Russia is shifting its drone warfare tactics with plans to increase jet-powered attack drones to 50% of all launched munitions in future airstrikes, creating severe new challenges for Ukraine’s air defense systems.

Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat announced on July 2 that Russia is increasing its use of jet-powered drones, which are beyond the capabilities of slower interceptor drones.

“These UAVs are already out of reach of interceptor drones, which can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour,” Ihnat clarified.

The latest variant of Russian strike drones differs fundamentally from its predecessors in both technical specifications and acoustic signature, according to a report by The Telegraph. Equipped with Chinese-manufactured turbojet engines, the upgraded drones are capable of reaching speeds of up to 500 kilometers per hour, nearly tripling the performance of conventional propeller-driven Shahed drones that fly at roughly 180 kilometers per hour.

These loitering munitions carry a high-explosive warhead weighing between 50 and 90 kilograms.
