Russian war

A Russian Banderol light cruise missile entered Moldova and exploded, triggering forest fires and prompting officials to temporarily close part of the country’s airspace, Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities said on Aug. 17.

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry condemned the airspace violation and the explosion near the village of Talmaza in Ștefan Vodă district.

“Such incidents are unacceptable,” the ministry said, calling the event a serious violation of Moldova’s sovereignty and a direct threat to citizens’ safety. The ministry added that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine continues to directly affect security in Moldova.

The Moldovan military confirmed that an unidentified aerial object was detected on the Kuchurhan–Tiraspol route and that it disappeared from radar near Talmaza. Radar records showed the object on the route at about 5:37 p.m. Moldova temporarily closed its central airspace for about 15 minutes while emergency services were dispatched. Officials said an explosion about 3 kilometers from the village was followed by fires in dry grass.

Earlier reports from the Ukrainian Air Force said multiple Banderol munitions were launched toward the Chornomorsk and Odesa.
