Ukrainian forces have foiled the months-long Russian offensive aimed at Sumy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sept. 12.

“Fighting continues in the border area of Sumy Oblast, but Russian forces in that sector have lost their offensive capability due to heavy losses,” Zelenskyy wrote in a Telegram post.

He added that Ukraine is still on the defensive in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.

“I am grateful to all our soldiers, sergeants, and officers who are carrying out combat missions on those fronts and inflicting significant losses on the Russians,” he said.

On Aug. 26, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported “positive developments” on the front, particularly in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts. He credited the 225th Assault Regiment, the 71st Jaeger Brigade, and Special Operations Forces units for driving that momentum.
