Russian forces advanced near Lyman, Siversk, Novopavlivka, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka, while Ukraine’s military conducted counterattacks, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War reported on May 3.

Russian troops made localized gains across five fronts, with intense fighting reported near Lyman, Siversk, Novopavlivka, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.

On May 2-3, limited fighting continued in the northern sector in Kursk Oblast of the Russian Federation, but Russian troops were unable to dislodge Ukrainian Defense Forces units. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously confirmed the presence of limited Ukrainian positions in the border area. In Sumy Oblast, the enemy tried to advance in the north, but without success. A similar situation is observed in the Kharkiv sector: Russian forces continue to attack near Vovchansk, but no progress has been recorded.

In the east of the country, the aggressor intensified their assault operations in the Kupyansk, Lyman, Siversk, Chasovoyarsk, Toretsk and Pokrovsk sectors. According to ISW, geolocation data confirms the advance of enemy units in certain areas, including north of Torske, west of Makiyivka and in the northeastern part of Hryhorivka. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are targeting enemy ammunition depots and launching counterattacks, particularly in the area of Bahatyr and Vilne Pole. Russian troops are reportedly suffering losses on the Pokrovsk front, losing at least 150 troops daily. The Institute also notes the strengthening of Russian groups in this area through redeployment from the north and mobilization of resources.

High intensity of hostilities remains on the southern frotns, especially in the areas of Huliaipole, Orikhiv and the western part of Zaporizhzhya Oblast. Despite numerous offensive attempts in the areas of Mala Tokmachka, Stepne and Kamyanske, the enemy did not achieve significant success. At the same time, Ukrainian forces continue to destroy enemy air defense equipment and facilities, in particular, a strike was made on the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system in the south of the country. No combat actions were recorded in the Kherson sector on May 3.

According to the official report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at least 180 combat engagements were recorded along the entire front line on May 3. Ukrainian troops continue to restrain the enemy's advance and launch local counterattacks to stabilize the situation in the hottest areas.
