“The British ship reported that the [Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral] Grigorovich had fired a warning shot after the two vessels sailed close to each other in the Channel,” the report said.
“The Grigorovich, one of Vladimir Putin’s Black Sea fleet ships, has been present near British waters for some weeks.”
The Telegraph, citing military intelligence, said the frigate had been escorting so-called Russian “shadow fleet” tankers and was circling a wind farm off the Suffolk coast.
Two Royal Navy patrol vessels, HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne, kept continuous watch on the Russian frigate as it transited the channel, the report said.
“The incident comes after Sir Keir Starmer ordered a team of
Royal Marines to board a Russian shadow tanker, the Smyrtos, in the early hours
of Sunday morning.”
