Rutte: frontline in Ukraine stabilized

The Ukrainian military has managed to stabilize the frontline in recent months and is slowly retaking lost territory, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on May 22.

“It’s clear that Ukraine is organizing a strong defense, and if you look at the front line now, the situation is stabilizing,” Rutte said at a news conference during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

“There are even reports that Ukraine is, in net terms, retaking territory. Not on a massive scale, but at least the situation is stabilizing — and maybe even moving now in the right direction, not the wrong one. That is, from west to east, rather than from east to west.”

Rutte said Ukrainians “have shown incredible ingenuity in their capacity for innovation.”

“That’s one of the things we are learning across the Alliance from Ukraine — for example, when it comes to fighting with drones and counter-drone technologies,” he said.

“So I wouldn’t be very happy if I were Putin today. Especially in the last couple of weeks — because things [for Putin] are not going in the right direction.”
