EU imposes new sanctions on Belarus for aiding Russia's war against Ukraine

The EU sanctions target the export of dual-use goods and advanced technologies. The EU is imposing further restrictions on the export of goods that could "contribute to the enhancement of Belarusian industrial capacities."

The sanctions also cover the export of maritime navigation goods and technologies to Belarus, as well as luxury goods. The import of gold and diamonds, both directly and indirectly, from Belarus will be banned, along with helium, coal, and mineral products, including crude oil.

The Council of the EU also prohibits the provision of certain services to Belarus, such as accounting, architectural, and engineering services, advertising, and market research.

The EU is expanding the ban on the transport of goods by road within the EU for vehicles registered in Belarus. These restrictions also apply to trucks registered outside of Belarus.

The EU bans the transit of dual-use goods and technologies, as well as items that might contribute to Belarus’s military and technological enhancement or to the development of its defense and security sector.

On June 20, the European Union adopted its 14th package of sanctions against Russia, marking the first time it has targeted Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.

The new sanctions will not impose a complete ban on importing Russian LNG, unlike previous embargoes on coal and seaborne oil, which are major revenue sources for Moscow. Instead, EU companies will be permitted to buy Russian LNG but will be prohibited from re-exporting it to third countries.

EU member states also agreed on stricter measures to combat sanctions evasion and to close loopholes left open in the previous 13 sanction packages.
