Ukraine's SBU Security Service has uncovered a network of informants working for Russia's FSB intelligence service, who helped direct Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian Defense Forces positions in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad oblasts, the agency's press service reported on Aug. 12.

The SBU detained four Russian informants across eastern and central Ukraine. According to the investigation, the suspects operated independently of one another but reported to a shared handler. Their priority targets included logistics warehouses storing Defense Forces weapons and ammunition, as well as Ukrainian air defense positions. The agents also gathered information on locations where Ukrainian troops and military equipment were most heavily concentrated.

According to the SBU, one member of the network was a former employee of a machine-building plant in Kramatorsk, who scouted the geolocations of operational airfields and fortifications in the region for Russian intelligence. Investigators found that two other agents passed the coordinates of Ukrainian military sites in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast to Russia — a utility company employee from Kamyanske and a military deserter from Pavlohrad.

In Kirovohrad Oblast, an unemployed man from Znamyanka was also detained. He reportedly walked around the town on the FSB's orders, recording geolocations he believed were being used by Ukrainian Defense Forces.

During searches, law enforcement seized mobile phones from the suspects containing evidence of their work for the FSB. The men have been charged under Part 2, Article 111 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (treason committed under martial law).

The suspects are currently in custody and face a potential sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
