Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's security during the Alaska summit will be provided jointly by his personal security service and the US Secret Service, former senior US Secret Service official Robert McDonald told Russia’s TASS propaganda agency on Aug. 12.
The coordination of security efforts is standard international practice and is not affected by political differences between countries.
In such cases, security and law enforcement agencies "put politics aside," McDonald said, citing the annual sessions of the UN General Assembly in New York, where security guards from dozens of countries, including political opponents of the U.S., work together smoothly and effectively.
Earlier that day, CNN reported that the U.S.-Russia summit would take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on the northern edge of Anchorage. It is one of the few available venues in Alaska during peak tourist season that meets the security requirements for the meeting.
