Ukraine and Greece strengthen security cooperation with new agreement

Ukraine has signed a bilateral security agreement with Greece, with the latter pledging additional resources to accelerate the training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots and technical personnel, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on X on Oct. 17.

"Today, we signed an Agreement on Security Cooperation with the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Greece is ready to continue meeting Ukraine’s most urgent defense needs," the president said.

Greece will provide additional resources to expedite the training of Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel for F-16 fighter jets.

The agreement also covers economic partnership, security cooperation, support for sanctions against Russia and holding it accountable, as well as cooperation in the fields of culture, education, and arts, the website of the Office of the President notes.

Greece has also committed to participating in the reconstruction of Ukraine and supports its future membership in the EU and NATO, as well as the Peace Formula.

Zelenskyy highlighted that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Greece has been providing material and technical assistance, as well as training support to Ukraine.

"I extend my gratitude to Greece for its assistance and the opportunities provided for the defense of our country and people," the president concluded.

Ukraine and Croatia also signed a Long-Term Support and Cooperation Agreement on Oct. 9. The deal stipulates the development of cooperation between the countries' defense industries. Croatia will continue to provide equipment and share its expertise in humanitarian demining.

Ukraine Compact and security guarantees for Ukraine

U.S. President Joe Biden presented the new Ukraine Compact, which united over 20 countries that have signed bilateral security agreements with Kyiv, on July 11.

The document brings together countries that have signed bilateral security agreements with Ukraine into a "unified, coordinated, and comprehensive architecture to support Kyiv."

The document was signed by leaders from the United States, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, along with the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, and the President of Ukraine.

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis signed a bilateral security agreement.

Ukraine signed a 10-year security agreement with Luxembourg on July 10.

Ukraine has signed 20 security agreements, including with the United States and the European Union.
