“If you count by the year on average, solar and wind generation is about 10 percent of all electricity in the country,” Kudrytskyi said.
“But in winter the role of solar generation is practically zero, while in spring, summer and September its share can reach 20 to 30 percent.”
He said some solar power plants feed directly into the national grid (as opposed to powering an isolated industrial or commercial facility) and that energy storage systems are starting to appear, allowing surplus solar power to be stored and used in the evening.
Kudrytskyi noted that solar power plants are most useful from March through October and are irrelevant in wintertime.
“But from March through October their share can be 15 percent, 20 percent, and in some hours maybe half of the country’s consumption,” he added.
“For example, at noon PV [photovoltaic] plants can produce several thousand megawatts, comparable to nuclear power station.”
In January, NV Business reported a boom in energy storage
systems in Ukraine, which help users stay powered longer during outages. In
October 2025, media reported that Chernivtsi Solar LLC, part of the Kernel Group, planned to build the largest solar plant in western Ukraine with a
capacity of 250 megawatts.
