Investigators found nine bullet casings at the scene, although authorities have not yet determined the exact number of gunshot wounds Portnov sustained. The large number of casings suggests the attacker intended to kill Portnov and may have emptied nearly an entire magazine.
Police suspect three individuals were involved in the crime—the shooter and two accomplices. The accomplices likely helped the gunman flee from the crime scene, located near a school in Madrid’s Pozuelo district.
On May 21, Andriy Portnov, a former adviser to Viktor Yanukovych and former first deputy head of the Presidential Administration, was killed in Madrid.
According to the local media, 51-year-old Portnov was shot dead by an unknown armed man at the gates of the American School in the prestigious Pozuelo district of Madrid. It happened on the morning of May 21.
Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported that Portnov was walking his children to school when he was shot. According to the media outlet, doctors who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead from injuries incompatible with life. He received several gunshot wounds, including four in the chest and one in the head.
