Select units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces successfully crossed the Dnipro River on Oct. 17-18, gaining a foothold in the occupied part of Kherson Oblast near Oleshkivska, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote in their Oct. 18 assessment.

Assessing the situation and its implications for Ukraine, military expert Mykhailo Zhyrokhov provided insights during an interview on Radio NV:

“As of now, there is a lack of heavy armor and significant weaponry in the area, suggesting this may be considered another landing operation, possibly intended to divert the aggressor’s reserves in some way.”

If the marines can secure their position, this landing operation could potentially transform into a new active front, he said.

“An offensive could potentially be launched from this location. Significant supplies of amphibious armor, bridging equipment, and engineering resources have been provided from Western sources.”

“Currently, the situation remains fluid. Yet, everything hinges on the weather,” said Zhyrokhov.
