The “gray zone” between the border villages of Zhuravka and Basivka in Sumy Oblast has expanded, according to the DeepState monitoring project, as Russian forces intensify efforts to breach Ukraine’s state border and establish a foothold stretching to the Sudzha checkpoint in Kursk Oblast, analyst Ruslan Mykula told public broadcaster Suspilne Sumy on April 8.

“Fighting persists, with daily fire strikes inflicted on the enemy,” Mykula stressed, offering no further specifics.

Russian assault units keep probing the Sumy Oblast border, only to be repelled or destroyed by Ukrainian forces, State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andriy Demchenko reported on April 4.

On April 6, Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security under the Culture Ministry debunked Russian propaganda claiming Basivka’s capture, with Demchenko clarifying that while Russian groups are present, the village remains outside their control.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a Le Figaro interview, warned that Russia is biding time for a potential offensive on Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts.

Basivka, the largest border settlement with viable shelters, is a prime target for Russian assaults, which could turn into a staging point for pushing toward Yunakivka, DeepState co-founder Mykula said on April 7.
