Sweden’s coast guard detained the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Hui Yuan near Ystad, for dumping coal residues into the sea in violation of environmental law, SVT reported on Apr. 12.

The report said the vessel was traveling from Russia to Las Palmas, Spain. After being detained, it anchored near Ystad.

Senior prosecutor Håkon Andersson at the Swedish Prosecution Authority’s environmental and occupational safety unit said the bulk carrier’s captain had been questioned and admitted committing an offense through negligence. Prosecutors issued him 50 daily fines of 500 kronor each.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., the vessel Hui Yuan was able to leave Sweden, SVT reported.

On April 10, a Swedish Armed Forces JAS 39 Gripen fighter intercepted a Russian Kilo-class submarine in the Kattegat Strait, which connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
