A Swedish Armed Forces Saab JAS 39 Gripen intercepted a Russian Kilo-class submarine in the Kattegat Strait, the military said on its website on Apr. 11.

The Kattegat Strait connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea.

The incident occurred on April 10. Sweden’s Armed Forces, together with allies, are monitoring the subsequent route of the Russian vessel toward the Baltic Sea.

The ministry said the operation is part of routine measures necessary to maintain situational awareness in the immediate region and to ensure the territorial integrity of Sweden and its allies.

On April 9, The Guardian reported that a British warship and aircraft tracked Russian submarines attempting to survey critical undersea infrastructure in the North Atlantic, forcing them to abandon their mission.

British Defense Secretary John Healey said the operation lasted more than a month. During that time, a Royal Navy warship and a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft “tracked and deterred any malicious activity” by three Russian submarines.

According to the minister, there is no evidence of damage to pipelines or cables. However, British forces, together with allies, will seek to verify this.
