According to Trump, Washington had previously spent significant resources supporting Ukraine in the war launched by Russia, but the current U.S. administration has changed its approach to weapons supplies.
“We are now producing ammunition across the country because we need it … He gave so much to Ukraine and got nothing in return. And I am selling them ammunition. The European Union is paying for it,” Trump said.
During the speech, the U.S. president also repeated his criticism of the previous administration, saying the United States, in his view, should not have been so deeply involved in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“He gave Ukraine $350 billion and got nothing in return,” Trump said, commenting on his predecessor’s policy.
Against this backdrop, Trump once again made clear that he expects European allies to bear a greater financial burden in supporting Ukraine.
Earlier, he had already made statements about a possible revision of the format of U.S. participation in arms supplies to Kyiv and linked further support to the actions of European partners.
