The Treasury Department issued a 30-day authorization in mid-March permitting the purchase of Russian oil and products already at sea. That authorization is set to expire April 11.
“U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Trump in the White House on Thursday to talk about extending the waiver, and they agreed it was a good idea, one of the sources said, asking not to be named,” Reuters said.
Bloomberg reported that India and the Philippines are among the countries urging the United States to renew the exemption for Russian oil already at sea.
One source said an Indian delegation in Washington is also
seeking an extension of permission to buy Iranian oil, which expires later this
month, and an expansion of the exemption to cover Russian LNG. An Indian
government official said New Delhi hopes for an extension but denied lobbying
and acknowledged that the country is buying a large volume of Russian oil.
