Trump reaffirmed his commitment to NATO’s collective defense pact during his address at the NATO summit in The Hague

Asked about his commitment to NATO’s Article 5, U.S. President Donald Trump said, “We’re with them until the end.”

Trump called the countries' commitment to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP “very big news.”

“I’ve been asking them to raise the rate to 5% for several years, and they raised it to 5%, which is a big jump from 2%. Many people weren’t even paying that 2%, so I think it’s going to be very big news,” Trump said.

In April, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters ahead of a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels that the U.S. would remain a member of the alliance, with Trump’s full support.

He also dismissed reports of a potential U.S. withdrawal from NATO as “hysteria.”

On Jan. 31, Rubio stated that NATO members should "pay enough for defense and not rely on the United States."

On Feb. 1, then-National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said some NATO members were avoiding their financial obligations to the alliance.

A NATO leaders' summit is scheduled for June 24-25 in The Hague, the first under the leadership of Mark Rutte, the new Secretary General of the alliance and former Prime Minister of the Netherlands. According to Western media reports, the situation in the Middle East will be the main focus, while Russia’s war against Ukraine is expected to take a secondary role.
