Russian war

U.S. President Donald Trump privately suggested deploying Chinese troops as peacekeepers in Ukraine after the Russo–Ukrainian war ends, the Financial Times reported on Aug. 29, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, Trump made the proposal last week during a White House meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He proposed asking China to enforce a neutral zone along the roughly 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) front line as part of a peace settlement with Russia.

At the same time, a senior Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the FT the account was “untrue” and that “there were no discussions about Chinese peacekeepers.”

The idea reportedly faces resistance in European capitals and was previously rejected by Zelenskyy, given that Ukraine and Europe view China as key Russian ally, sustaining the enemy war machine throughout the war.

Earlier in August, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia would agree to security guarantees for Ukraine that involve China, the United States, UK, and France, and that Moscow should participate in enforcing those guarantees.
