Trump announced the decision during a White House meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
“We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain,” the U.S. president said.
“We don’t want anything to do with Spain.”
It appears Trump has a true embargo in mind, as opposed to relying on arbitrary tariff rates, his preferred foreign policy tool. During the same meeting, he asked U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about embargoing Spain.
“I know that you have strong power that the Supreme Court clarified,” Greer replied. “We know you can use it and if you need to use it to assure national and economic security, we’ll do it.”
“I agree; The Supreme Court reaffirmed your ability to
implement an embargo,” Bessent added.
