The keel-laying event to mark the start of construction was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Navy, Vice Admiral Andriy Tarasov, as part of a delegation from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, headed by Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Havrylov.
This is the second corvette Ankara is building for Ukraine. In October 2022 the first, the Hetman Ivan Mazepa, was launched.
The ship was ceremonially named by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, becoming the first ship of its class for the Ukrainian Navy.
The Ada-class is a type of missile corvette developed for the Turkish Navy. These vessels are designed for patrolling on the high seas and anti-submarine operations, and incorporate stealth technology.
The project to build two vessels of this type for Ukraine began in 2021. According to the agreement, the corvettes are expected to join the Ukrainian Navy in 2024.
