President Donald Trump’s administration has approved the
first transfer of U.S. military equipment to Ukraine, paid for by Kyiv’s
Western allies, Reuters reported on Sept. 16, citing two sources familiar with
the matter.
The sources said U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby signed off on two shipments totaling $500 million under the Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) mechanism.
On Sept. 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expects the U.S. government to finally put PURL to use, enabling Ukraine to retain access to critical U.S.-made arms.
The PURL mechanism was announced on Aug. 4. It allows European NATO allies to fund shipments of U.S. military equipment to Ukraine, based Kyiv’s requests and approved by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).
