U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus are urged to leave the country immediately, according to a U.S. government travel advisory issued on Dec. 18.

“Due to Belarusian authorities’ arbitrary enforcement of local laws and the risk of detention, continued facilitation of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the heightened volatility and unpredictable nature of the regional security environment, do not travel to Belarus,” the advisory states.

On Feb. 28, 2022, the State Department ordered the departure of U.S. government employees and the suspension of operations of the U.S. Embassy in Minsk. All consular services, routine and emergency, were suspended.

Belarus was assigned Level 4: Do Not Travel status.

On Dec. 6, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced plans to deploy the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) to Belarus next year.

On Nov. 7, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko said that Minsk would petition for the Nobel Peace Prize for Donald Trump if he helps end Russia's war in Ukraine.
