The United Arab Emirates’ Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted a new wave of Iranian missiles and drones launched toward the country, Khaleej Times reported on Feb. 28.

The Defense Ministry said debris from intercepted targets fell in various areas of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with no casualties reported.

At the same time, eyewitnesses posted videos on social media showing smoke and flames rising after missile and drone debris fell. One piece of debris landed near the five-star Palm Hotel & Resort in Dubai.

The ministry stressed that the attack was a “blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law,” adding that the state reserves the full right to take all necessary measures to defend its territory and citizens and to ensure the preservation of its sovereignty, security and stability.

U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran

On Feb. 28, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel carried out a preemptive strike on Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump later confirmed the start of “large-scale combat operations” and called on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to lay down its arms.

Explosions were reported in Iran’s capital, Tehran, and other major cities. Satellite imagery shows that the palace of Ali Khamenei was completely destroyed.

Reuters initially reported that Khamenei was not in Tehran at the time of the joint U.S.-Israeli strike and had been moved to a secure location.

Later, Israel’s Channel 12, citing unnamed sources, reported that Khamenei may have been killed.

In response to the attack, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel. Iranian missiles also struck Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, with reports of strikes on U.S. military bases.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the Iranian attacks on the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan. The Foreign Ministry said the kingdom is ready to make all its capabilities available for “any measures” that may be taken in response to Iran’s actions.
