The United Kingdom plans to join the EU’s loan program for Ukraine, with negotiations set to take place at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Reuters, citing a statement from the UK government, reported on May 4.

"When the UK and the European Union work together, we all reap the benefits,” he said.

He stated that the loan negotiations will help guarantee Ukraine acquires the equipment it needs to protect its freedom, and will give the UK industry the opportunity to fully prove itself.

“In these volatile times we need to go further and faster on defence to keep people safe,” Starmer said.

He plans to discuss the issue with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with other topics such as cooperation in the steel industry, youth mobility, and a start-up funding initiative.

The EU approved the loan to Ukraine in late April, with the first tranche arriving in May. The loan is set to cover Ukraine’s needs for 2026-2027.

In February, EU countries agreed to include British companies among those eligible for military procurement contracts for Ukraine.

Under the program’s terms, Ukraine will be allowed to purchase weapons from the UK and the U.S. if certain equipment is unavailable within the EU or if those countries can supply it significantly faster.
