UK special forces placed on high alert for possible deployment to Ukraine

According to two sources referenced by the outlet, British special forces units have been instructed to prepare for possible mobilization to Ukraine.

Last week, the UK’s military planning command center reportedly received directives to begin preparing personnel and resources for the mission.

The orders, which also included instructions for special forces reservists, involved ensuring that military equipment is in working condition and that troops are prepared for rapid deployment.

UK peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

On Feb. 16, The Telegraph reported that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was “ready and willing” to send British troops to Ukraine to help enforce any future peace agreement.

On Feb. 19, The Guardian reported that the UK and France were working on plans to create European forces aimed at preventing future Russian attacks on Ukraine. According to Western officials, the proposal would involve fewer than 30,000 soldiers, with the mission likely focused on air and maritime defense.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that the aggressor state is “categorically” opposed to the deployment of a European peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine.

On March 15, a virtual summit took place involving the so-called “coalition of the willing” — a group of nations considering participation in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

That same day, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that Ukraine is a sovereign state and that Russia should have no say in deciding whether peacekeepers are deployed after the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also urged that peacekeepers be sent to Ukraine without consideration for Russia’s objections.
