Contrary to claims made by Russian officials, the Ukrainian government has nothing to do with the recent flare-up in the Syrian civil war, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Dec. 4.

The ministry noted that Moscow, along with Tehran, bears responsibility for the deteriorating situation in Syria. They also emphasized that the crimes of the dictator Bashar Assad's regime against his own people and his unwillingness to ensure a fair dialogue within the country have jeopardized Syria's survival as a single independent state.

“Ukraine, unlike Russia, unconditionally adheres to the norms of international law, the principles of inviolability of sovereignty, and the territorial integrity of other countries,” the statement reads.

Previously, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, claimed during a U.N. Security Council meeting that Ukraine's Defense Intelligence was supposedly "assisting Syrian rebels" from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham movement.
