According to the investigation, the 48-year-old foreigner, who holds a doctorate in technical sciences, previously worked at a defense corporation and a chemical research institute before arriving in Ukraine.
The man arrived in Ukraine in early 2017 and tried to recruit Ukrainian scientists for collaboration in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He was apprehended by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) while attempting to purchase classified aerospace technology.
The court found him guilty of espionage and sentenced him to prison. He served his sentence in penitentiary facilities in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya oblasts.
Upon his release on Oct. 28, law enforcement officers escorted him to a border crossing in Odesa Oblast and handed him over to the border guard service for deportation, as per the expulsion order.
The Chinese citizen is banned from entering Ukraine for the next five years.
