Demand rising in Europe as three more biogas plants in Ukraine prepare to launch biomethane production

“Four plants are already operational and have begun exporting biomethane to Europe. Another three are finishing the conversion of equipment from biogas to biomethane production and will start soon,” he said.

Heletukha noted that while the European biomethane market is currently experiencing what he called “growing pains,” it remains undersupplied — and there is clear interest among European buyers in Ukrainian biomethane.

As previously reported, agribusiness giant MHP, owned by Yurii Kosiuk, launched commercial production of liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) and has already made its first export deliveries to the European Union.

According to a study by Green Deal UkraЇna and the Ukrainian Climate Office, Ukraine’s biomethane production potential is estimated at around 1 billion cubic meters by 2030, and between 6 and 22 billion cubic meters per year by 2050.

In February, Ukraine began exporting biomethane to Europe via pipeline.

The first batch was exported by the agribusiness group Vitagro, which operates a plant in Khmelnytskyi Oblast with an annual capacity of 3 million cubic meters of biomethane.

Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by purifying biogas generated through the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter or thermal gasification of biomass.
