“We met with NATO’s Secretary General [Mark Rutte],” the president said during a press briefing.
“They [the alliance] invited us to the summit. I believe this is important.”
He added that Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will now engage with his NATO counterparts to discuss what the summit might achieve.
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that participating in the upcoming NATO summit is crucial for Ukraine and warned that Kyiv being excluded from the event would be a “win” for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
On May 27, the president told reporters that he had not yet received an invitation to the summit.
On May 15, European media reported that, for the first time in three years, Zelenskyy might be excluded from the main event at the NATO summit to “appease U.S. President Donald Trump.”
Later, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed media reports that the United States opposed inviting Ukraine to the summit.
