Ukraine’s procurement of ammunition for FPV drones is insufficient, creating a critical gap in its military capabilities compared to Russia, Roman Kostenko, secretary of the parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, said in an interview with Radio NV on April 17.

“President [Volodymyr Zelenskyy] talks about procuring FPV drones, saying we’re supplying one million, two, three, ten million,” Kostenko said.

“But we forget something critical: ammunition for these drones. Our policy should ensure that when we build a drone, ammunition is built in parallel. Drones should arrive on the battlefield with munitions.”

Russia currently surpasses Ukraine in the number of drone munitions available.

“What’s the point of producing five million drones if we can’t supply them with ammunition?” he added.

“There’s a real problem with munitions in the military. Some guys are making or repurposing them themselves, but that’s not how it should be. This needs a state program handled by specialists.”

Ukraine’s purchase of drone munitions does not match the number of drones in use, an issue discussed in meetings of the parliamentary defense committee.

In March, Alexander Kamyshin, former minister for strategic industries and current presidential adviser, said Ukraine has the capacity to manufacture up to 5 million FPV drones annually.
