Discussed during a recent meeting of party MPs and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the new body is provisionally referred to as the Repatriation Ministry.
“We’re currently discussing potential candidates to lead it [the department],” Arakhamia said in a Telegram post.
On Aug. 27, Zelenskyy expressed his hope for the return of Ukrainian citizens from abroad but emphasized that there should be no coercion involved.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Zelenskyy had asked European leaders to assist in returning Ukrainian men of conscription age to Ukraine.
According to the Center for Economic Strategy, as of late January, 4.9 million Ukrainians went abroad due to the war, with the largest numbers in Germany and Poland. The research suggests that up to 2.3 million may choose to remain outside Ukraine.
A survey conducted in April by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology found that 50% of Ukrainian refugees living in Germany, Poland, and Czechia stated they would not return to Ukraine.
