Besides the details of his talks with the Russian dictator, Witkoff will also outline the preparations for potential meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Putin.
Earlier on Aug. 7, Putin indicated he was open to meeting with Zelenskyy but noted that such a meeting would require “appropriate conditions.” He also confirmed mutual interest from Russia and the United States in arranging a meeting with Trump, potentially in the United Arab Emirates.
The prospect of Trump–Putin–Zelenskyy meetings emerged after Witkoff met with the Russian dictator on Aug. 6. According to subsequent media reports, Witkoff offered de-facto recognition of Russia-occupied Ukrainian territories by shelving any disputes over the matter for decades.
Having spoken with Trump after Witkoff departed from Moscow, Zelenskyy said that Russia now “appears more inclined” towards peace.
