Due to Russian attacks, Ukraine will have to increase gas imports - but therefore raising a number of questions, Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote on Telegram on March 26.

"Because of the shelling, this year we will need a lot of gas imports - up to 5 billion cubic meters," he wrote.

"That means it will cost several billion dollars."

"And here, either our partners will help us, or we will have to contribute our own," he added.

"But they’re not showing confidence yet. And here’s the question that a couple of G7 embassies raised with me: 'Is it normal that your government is urgently asking for money to purchase gas — while at the same time, you want to spend $1 billion on purchasing Russian equipment for the unfinished nuclear power plant?'"

"And that makes a good question. One to which there is no answer… or rather, there is no censored answer. You can’t tell the diplomats that we have 'issues' in energy management."

Earlier, Reuters reported that from April to October, Ukraine will be forced to import at least 4 billion cubic meters of gas, totaling up to $1 billion.

Before the intensification of Russian airstrikes on gas infrastructure, Ukraine was producing 52-53 million cubic meters of gas per day, but Russian attacks have reduced production. Although some of the production has been restored, the volumes are kept secret.

Ukraine typically starts injecting gas into storage in April.

By mid-October, Ukraine needs at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas in reserve to ensure a steady supply through the winter season. As of now, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), Ukrainian underground gas storage is 3.16% full, while in the EU it stands at 33.91%.

On March 26, 2025, it was reported that Ukraine intends to import record volumes of gas from Europe, as Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and the rapid depletion of reserves have led to increased demand.
