Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said it is working with the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to ensure such cases do not become systemic.
A commission of the Ground Forces is investigating the situation in the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade. The ministry said those responsible “will be held accountable.”
Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi ordered commanders of operational groups and corps to verify troop supplies along the front line by May 20.
“Distorted reports on the combat situation will have direct negative consequences for officials,” the ministry added.
On April 23, a Threads user published photos of emaciated soldiers from the 14th brigade who, she said, were left at positions without food or water and were losing consciousness.
On April 24, the General Staff confirmed supply problems for units near Kupiansk and said it had dismissed the commanders of the 14th brigade and the 10th corps. They will be replaced by Col. Taras Maksimov and Brig. Gen. Artem Bohomolov, respectively.
Maksimov’s appointment as commander of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Roman the Great was reported earlier on April 20. He had served in the brigade since 2018 and was appointed commander of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade in December 2024.
The General Staff said food supplies had already been delivered to front-line troops and announced plans to evacuate soldiers. Syrskyi also tasked Mykhailo Darapatyi with checking supply conditions in other sectors.
