The birth rate in 2024 has plummeted to one and a half times lower than before the Russian full-scale invasion: 87,655 children were born in Ukraine in the first half of 2021.
Oblasts with the highest number of newborns are:
- Kyiv: 9,695 children
- Lviv Oblast: 7,923 children
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: 6,962 children.
Oblasts with the lowest birth rate are:
- Kherson Oblast: 221 children in six months
- Donetsk Oblast: 702 children
- Luhansk Oblast: no births recorded in the first half of 2024.
Oblasts with the highest mortality rates are:
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: 26,374 deaths in six months
- Kharkiv Oblast: 17,999 deaths
- Kyiv: 17,449 deaths.
OpenDataBot's data highlights the severe demographic challenge, showing that there are now three deaths for every birth. This is a significant increase compared to the 2018-2020 period, when there were two deaths for every birth.
Despite this statistic, the 2024 death toll is 1.4 times lower than the number of deaths recorded in the first half of 2021 (349,041 deaths), which marked the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
