A planned Ukrainian raid in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast turned into a resilient defensive operation, inflicting heavy losses on elite Russian units and disrupting enemy advances near the border, editor of Censor.NET Yuriy Butusov wrote on April 28.

In his post, he reflected on Ukrainian surprise cross-border raid into Russia’s Belgorod Oblast - and how it influenced the frontline situation.

For over a month, the combat operation has been conducted by the 225th Assault Regiment along with attached units, including the 33rd Assault Regiment, a consolidated rifle battalion from the Air Force, and the 414th Madyar’s Birds Brigade.

A small "sanitary" strip of territory near the villages of Popovka and Demidovka was brought under Ukrainian control.

The operation was originally designed as a rapid raid aimed at inflicting serious losses on the enemy and forcing the Russians to pull forces away from the sector where they were advancing toward Guyevo and Gornal. This objective was successfully achieved.

Now, the raid has transformed into a positional defensive operation in the forested area along the Russian defensive line and its "dragon’s teeth" fortifications, carried out by small infantry groups and drones, with active support from artillery, aviation, and high-precision missiles.

The Russian command has deployed significant reinforcements to the area — including the 34th Motorized Rifle Brigade, the 128th Motorized Rifle Brigade, the 83rd Motorized Rifle Regiment, the Akhmat Special Forces Regiment, a battalion from the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, a battalion from the 88th Espanola Reconnaissance and Sabotage Brigade, and FSB units.

Over this time, the enemy has suffered heavy losses — the 128th Brigade and a battalion of the 155th Brigade have been withdrawn for replenishment.

Pilots from the 414th Brigade alone have destroyed more than 100 units of armored equipment.

The 225th Regiment shows no mercy for Russian mistakes, and the casualty ratio at this stage is heavily in Ukraine’s favor. Notably, the highly publicized Russian Akhmat and Espanola units have suffered severe losses and failed the missions assigned to them by the Russian command in this area.

Every heroic infantryman, every participant in this successful operation, deserves to be recognized with state awards. At this stage, the casualty ratio remains overwhelmingly in Ukraine’s favor.

Every successful action has its time, and it is hoped that the raid, which began so effectively, will also be concluded at the appropriate moment, as it has fully achieved its original objectives.
