The Ukrainian government often “resists” unfavorable news coming from the battlefield, the head of the U.S. State Department’s Global Engagement Center, James Rubin, said in an interview with Politico on March 28.

“Some days, war reporters report things that aren’t necessarily in the interest of [Ukrainian President] Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” said Rubin.

“Sometimes the Ukrainian government may resist the kind of freedom of information that’s normal for us.”

He urged Ukraine to continue moving towards becoming a more open society and a “fully-fledged democracy.”

Drawing comparisons with Moscow, he said it is better when journalists report negative news from the front than "the controlled environment that Russia has placed on all of its people."
