Kyiv has signed a contract with Germany’s Diehl Defence to produce IRIS-T air defense systems and missiles for them in Ukraine, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said on May 28.

The deal is valued at EUR2.2 billion ($2.5 billion), Umerov said in a statement. During a meeting with his German counterpart, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, a letter of intent was signed confirming that Germany would finance the purchase of Ukrainian long-range weapons for “hundreds of millions of euros.”

In addition, Umerov said Germany will fund the manufacture of Ukrainian-made medical equipment.

“Germany has pledged to support investment in Ukraine’s defense industry and to encourage others to do the same, particularly with regard to air defense,” he added.

The minister also thanked Germany for its leadership and sustained support in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.

Earlier the same day, the German government announced a new military aid package to Ukraine worth EUR5 billion ($5.6 billion).
