Signed on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, the deal stipulates that Japan will provide Ukraine with $4.5 billion in aid throughout 2024 and will continue military aid to Kyiv over the 10-year term of the agreement.
Specifically, the document includes Japan's assistance in terms of security and defense, cooperation in humanitarian, technical, and financial areas, and joint efforts to secure a just peace for Ukraine and maintain sanctions against Russia.
"For Japan, this type of [security] agreement and this level of support are groundbreaking," said Zelenskyy.
The President's Office added this is the first bilateral security deal Ukraine has struck with a non-NATO member.
By now, Ukraine signed similar agreements with the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Norway.
